SOPHIE My name is Sophie. TRAVIS I'm Travis SOPHIE And we're at DiMillo's Marina in Portland. TRAVIS Why don't you come down and check out our boat TRAVIS Our first boat was the Catalina 27. It was great for one person and a cat. SOPHIE We started looking for a bigger boat. It was like, all right. I'm living on it, it's comfortable, but it's not that comfortable. But did you know that there's a make and model that's the same boat for sale in South Portland for a little more.
Money, but in good condition. TRAVIS So we called the guy up and we looked at it. All the things that were wrong with the other boat had been fixed in this one. SOPHIE So the engine runs You're sure the engine runs It really starts, it does. It's good He was like, yeah. Started it up. We're like, wow. TRAVIS So some things that are different on a boat than a house is everything moves. SOPHIE We needed a special rack for books, and a special rack for our spices and things that wouldn't fall over.
TRAVIS If it really gets rocky in here, the stuff will just end up on the floor, so it's a good test of how clean you are. SOPHIE The biggest challenge was finding storage for all out stuff. A Ushaped galley is a really common galley shape for boats, because there's always something to brace yourself on, no matter how the wind is going. We've got the added benefit of this back here, threeburner propane stove and oven. We don't have refrigeration. We have ice boxes, and we have hot and cold pressure water.
TRAVIS This is a seven foot by seven foot triangle, all cushioned under here. So we sleep our heads here, and our feet this way, because there's less of an angle. Hey, what are you doing SOPHIE Cat's name is Sir Francis Drake. Sir Francis Drake was the first person to circumnavigate the world, and it's a sweet nautical name. I wanted a dog forever, and the rule was that we couldn't have a dog, until we had a 35foot boat. And then we found this boat, fell in love with.
Man builds log mansion OffBeat Spaces tutorial
DAN I am Dan McPheeters. We're in the town of Caroline in New York. And we're in a log house that I built by myself. BLUEGRASS MUSIC A lot of interesting things were happening in the '70s, and there were a lot of people that were looking into alternative structures. I was probably one of the least interesting of them, because I do like right angles. They're kind of handy. My architectural drawing was done on a napkin at a dinner party. I refined it a little bit after that, maybe added a.
Little graph paper. I like to think of it as an ongoing project. So it's an unfinished work. If you're going to live in a log house, you want to give that sort of rustic feel to the house. Two inchesthick solid maple, which used to be a bowling alley in Eddy Street. This is a cozy little room we call the library, which is used for other things as well. But a great deal of reading does get done in here. It turns out we entertain quite a bit in the bathroom,.
Because we have a sauna here. It's a very tight little space, but we've had as many as eight people in here at one time. So it can get kind of cozy. I've been heating this house since the mid'70s with a wood stove right here. This is actually a very recent project. I built in a directvent gas fireplace. And of course, my wife loves it because she can just push a button, and she gets a nice cozy fire. I wanted sort of a grand space where you could.
Look all the way up. We use this extensively in the summertime. I use it as a studio space. We have parties in here. In the winter time, it's kind of storage for a lot of the outdoor furniture. Well, this is walking around the back of the house. There's a balcony out there. When the day lilies are in bloom, I can stick my head out and look at how spectacular everything looks. HBEER Benefits University of Kentucky Students
Michael Speaks How do you turn university researchcreated by students and faculty, in collaboration among four collegeshow do you turn that into applied knowledge, might it be possible to take that applied knowledge out and make it part of a larger project for the state Jerry Rickett One of the things I really like about this project is the student involvement. The initial challenge we gave themthe hundred thousand and the energy efficiency and the building in a houseboat plant, and hopefully buy as much local products as you canthose are constraints a customer would put on a.
Student once they become a professional. Brian Moore It required you to push further in your concepts. So when you come up with an idea of how you can save energy, it wasn't just, Okay, that sounds like a great idea. It was, Well, let's make it work, and let's make it work on a budget. Michael Speaks We have now conducted a studio research project every semester for the last three years. Michael Jacobs We started out with singlefamily residential, now we're looking at multifamily. We're looking at the opportunity of shipping units in containers. We're looking at the.
Possibility of doing classrooms for schools that are better than benchmarks. All of these are projects that are supposed to leverage beyond the traditional modular. Bruce Swetnam The benefit to the students is a book that documents every step that they've taken along the way, and so they're engaging in a project in a deeper level than they have in any other studio. When they graduate, they can take this book to just about any office in the country and say, This is what I know how to do. David Biagi They're looking at projects designed around the world with new materials,.
New techniqueswe have the equipment here to rapidly prototype and create designs with 3D printers, and quickly test out scenarios. Bruce Swetnam The computer programs they use3D modeling, the energy performanceall those things are critical to offices and a lot of people that are in the profession right now don't have those skills. Michael Speaks You create a prototype of a design and then you refine it, and then you create another and you refine it. And what the students are beginning to understand and to see and to learn is that prototyping process itself is the way in which innovation.
Occurs. Brian Moore The first one's never perfect. The second one's never perfect, and the third one's not going to be perfect. So the more that they construct and the more that we test the system in an academic environment, the better performance you're going to get from each unit. That performance is going to hopefully exponentially increase as the studio continues to run, and as the prototypes continue to be built. Michael Speaks In almost every sense this project really is a prototype itself for where I would like, and I think a lot of our faculty.

RV Arcticus Build Part 3
When building the hull of a research vessel, upside down is the most efficient approach. Take the Arcticus, for example, the new research vessel being built for the US Geological Survey's Great Lakes Science Center. Now that construction of the hull is complete, the whole thing needs to be flipped over. First, a hoist is used to lift the hull and move it outside. Then three cranes are attached to the hull, two cranes on the port side, one crane on the starboard side. Slowly, very slowly, the crane operators lift the port side high into the air.
Of course, it goes a little faster at 100 times normal speed. This is no small task, since the hull weighs 67 tons. That's more than the weight of 30 minivans. Once the hull is hanging safely from its port side, one of the cranes is disconnected and reattached to the starboard side. Then the starboard side is lifted until the hull is right side up. Jack stands support the hull so that the cranes can be detached. Finally, the hoist is brought in again to move the hull back into the work bay, where.
