Here in Los Angeles housing is expensive but there's an alternative which could save about thirty percent on construction cost shipping container homes CBS News Tuesday market shows us more as the cost of living rises the way we live is changing people are living in modular homes prefab homes and even shipping container homes. containers get all the headlines countless shipping containers come into the ports of LA and Long Beach and many of them stay but some are being repurposed into everything from retail spaces to homes when Paula approached me about a shipping container home I thought this is insane.
And then I met Peter and I still thought it was insane. Matt and Paula dowd are using shipping containers to build two shipping container homes in Redondo Beach one for them and one for Grandma. I can age in place and my grandchildren will grow up here and I'll be with my daughter and my son inlaw. they're building with architect Peter DeMaria but it's an idea that still stirs controversy. In this area you mostly find Mediterranean or craftsman style homes and you bring something like this to the city and.
They're like, yeah I don't know it took several trips to the City Council to get their property approved with multiple modifications to the design and Matt had the same concerns as the city. my opinion was oh my gosh it's going to be boxy and corrugated but many homes built from shipping containers look like this and this all of these homes were designed by the architect very few people be able to tell wow that's a shipping container home. containers are the thing that really breaks down the door and people say.
Maybe I can do the little bit differently and I'm not going to sacrifice quality and I'm not going to sacrifice on the size of the house and all of it translates into doing it less expensively. most containers can be covered with any surface like wood stucco or vinyl siding and it's affordable while maintaining quality in general they're around 30 percent less than traditional construction a great value but the quality of construction is a heavy gauge steel that that blows away wood frame house a comforting thought in quakeprone.
Southern California and by upcycling metal containers it's one of the greenest options available so the containers become a means to an end we're changing the way we think about building and we're saving the planet. we're taking material and upcycling it as opposed to cutting down five or six acres of forest every time we put up a new wood frame house. DeMaria says there's a revolution to change how we live and the Dowd's are early adopters and I think this is how a great progress is made really this.

DIY Makeup Organizer At Home With P. Allen Smith
Hey, who doesn't need more countertop space We can all use it. My friend Mitchell is a master at finding things around the house, ordinary things, and putting them to work in a very clever way. When I bought this house, this towel bar was in a really weird place. I'm not ready to retile the whole bathroom yet, so what am I gonna do about this odd towel bar sitting here I also need a place to store my makeup that's not in this filthy bin. I would like to be able to see my makeup. So, I think I've figured out a solution to.
This, and something that I can make for free. Easiest craft in the whole world. Easiest solution to anything. So I'm just gonna take my little wire snips and pop this. Now, you don't have to use these pencil cups in particular, you can pretty much use anything you want. They've got those little baskets that have handles on them. You can use those. Just whatever is about this size that you've got laying around. I just happened to have four of these. And then I'm gonna stuck that in there and made those holes. And that's it. Then I'm.
Gonna use these shower curtain hooks that cost less than a dollar if they're a dollar, they're not much more even with tax. But they're just hooks. And we're gonna use these and stick them through, and then go set this up. And I'm just attaching it on there. And now we've got four I'm going against my usual rule of three here but that so I can fit everything on here. And I picked black because all the frames in my bathroom are black. So now, to get rid of all of this I now have an easily accessible place for brushes. So I got my.
Homemade Wasp Repellent and Trap At Home With P. Allen Smith
Hey, the only good wasp is a dead wasp. Let me show you how to take care of them naturally. I don't know what the deal is this year, but the wasps seem to be everywhere. And I don't know about you, but I'm a live and let live kinda guy, but when it comes to wasps, I don't know. They sting and they hurt, so I want them out of my life. Here are a couple of ways that will help you make sure there are no wasps around. First thing I wanna show.
You is a repellant, which is really easy to make. All you need is a spray bottle like this. What's great about this recipe is it's all natural It's water and peppermint oil. You see, wasps hate peppermint oil. So what you wanna do is you just wanna take 1 tablespoon of peppermint oil to 4 cups of water. Just like this. Add the water. You can spray this directly onto the wasp's nest. And you're like going, Yeah, okay, when am I gonna do that because you don't wanna get stung. Well, spray them when they're sort of drowsy.
Or asleep. So spray them at night or in the very early morning. And what you'll find is peppermint oil by the way, this smells really good peppermint oil will kill the larva, the eggs and the adults. And they hate the aroma of this so badly that they will not return back to the nest. So think about that. Now let me show you how to make a wasp trap. All you need is a 2 liter bottle. And what you're gonna do is you're gonna invert the top of the 2 liter bottle like this. So let me show you, I've already started this.
One You simply cut it, about the top 15 off of it like this all the way around. Tada. And then this is placed like this, and then you just simply take some duct tape, who can live without duct tape, just take some duct tape around the top just like that, okay. Now the idea is that you pour a liquid in here that attracts the wasps, they follow it down into here and they can't get out, and they die floating around in whatever liquid you use. Now I'm making a simple syrup, which is so simple, you'll always be able to remember.
This recipe. It's actually 1 cup of boiling water to 1 cup of sugar. And when this goes into solution, all you wanna do is allow that to cool and it will look like this, and then you simply pour it into the wasp trap like that. You don't have to use to all up, that's plenty. You can also use beer. Yes, wasps are attracted to beer. But this you can make, keep in the refrigerator, attract the wasps, then kill them there if they're flying around and bothering you. If you're finding these tips helpful, check in with us regularly.
How To Build a Retaining Wall
Give your plain landscape a stunning makeover with an attractive block retaining wall. The blocks for this project have a locking flangewhich makes the installation easyand they can be used to build walls up to 28 inches high. It's smart to plan your layout. Avoid having downspouts pointed at the wall and if it's against the house, keep the soil bed well below the siding. To mark a freeform layout, use a rope or hose to outline the shape. Then use a shovel to mark the outline. For straight lines, mark the entire bed area with stakes, string and marking paint. Make.
Curved corners by tying a string to a stake that's equidistant to the edgescreating a compassand spraying the curves with marking paint. To determine how many blocks you'll need per row, divide the total length of the wall by the length of the block. To see how many rows you'll need, divide the ideal wall height by the height of the blockaccount for the first row to be halfburied. With the layout marked you can begin digging the trench. To bury the first row about halfway, dig the trench about 4 to 6 inches deep, and dig 12 inches wide, or twice the width of.
The block. If the trench slopes, you'll have to step up or down to keep the blocks level. Tamp down the dirt with a hand tamper and keep it level. Next, fill the trench with about 3 inches of paver base, spread it with a rake, and tamp it down. Tamping the base provides a strong foundation. When it's all level, you can begin installing the blocks. For row one, knock off the flange with a hammer and chisel so the blocks will sit flat. Beginning at the end with the lowest elevation, set the first block in place and check for.
Level. Then place the next block, making sure it's even with the first. Continue installing the first row, periodically checking for level. Fill in under low blocks with paver base, or tap down high blocks with a rubber mallet. After installing each row, sweep dirt off the tops. To start the second row you'll have to cut a block to stagger the joints. Mark it, and cut it with a masonry blade. Put it in place keeping the flange tight against the first row. Check it for level. When installing the next few rows, you'll need to add drainage directly behind the blocks.
Lay down landscape fabric behind the wall, leaving enough excess to reach the top. Then fill in directly behind the wall with gravel as you continue to build. For the last two rows of full blocks, apply concrete adhesive to the wall, then set the blocks in place. Now just fold the excess fabric back, and fill in with soil and plants. A plain garden bed gets a brand new personality with the help of a block retaining wall. Want more great ideas and howto's Go to LowesHowTo or just click to subscribe.
How to Make Homemade Dishwasher Detergent At Home With P. Allen Smith
How about a Greener and more cost effective way to make your own dishwashing detergent. I don't know if you've paid much attention to some of the chemicals that you can find just by reading the labels on some of our ordinary household cleaners, like dishwashing detergent. If you think about all of that, it's going into the environment in some way. How about a natural solution that's really easy And, actually, this recipe for your own dishwashing detergent will actually cost you less if you're buying just a standard brand off the shelf. Let me show you how easy it is. You're basically just taking three.
Ingredients You're taking good old sodium bicarbonate or washing soda, Epson salts we all know Epson salts from soaking your sore feet, which is magnesium sulfate, and then borax, which is sodium tetra borate. If you take these and combine them in a simple ratio, you're gonna come out with a great solution. I'm gonna take 1 cup of the borax to a 12 cup of the Epson salts. There we go. And 1 cup of washing soda. You just mix all this together. Now if we take the three different ingredients and talk about what they do, well,.
You'll get a sense of how this is so effective. For instance, the washing soda It's great for eliminating odor and also cutting into grease. Next, the Epson salts Since it's gritty, it's good for scouring. And then, finally, the borax is a great disinfectant. Now with it mixed together, I can just store it in some pint jars. This goes a long way if you don't spill it all over a cutting board like I am. The point is, it only takes a tablespoon of this each time you load your dishwasher. So, these ingredients I have here, make about.
DIY Bulletin Board With Mitchell Crisp At Home With P. Allen Smith
As they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure. You know, my friend Mitchell is very, very clever. She's come up with a way to do a unique bulletin board using things that most would ordinarily toss out. Hey, somebody's throwing away this perfectly good memo board. That's what I see anyway. Spray paint is awesome. And I like an industrial look for this. You know how you get just piles of stuff on tables. And then you go Oh, no, I need that phone number, I might need that beret. Well, I'm about to make a solution.
For all of that. It's not just a normal cork bulletin board, but with these little slots and holes and wire, it's a good size, we'll be able to hold all kinds of things. Everything else I need, besides this great find, is in my house right now. Alright, I'm gonna get a good first coat of this. Some paint, you might wanna do another coat, but a lot of times one coat will do it because it's metal and it's spray paint. Yep, it's dry. Let's go hang it. Okay, so I have three nails to support it, and it hangs on its own. Here's.
The magic thing about this You can pretty much use anything to hang and hang it. So I got clips. Put that there. You can use a clothes pin. Hanging that there. I'm gonna use these shooks to hang a little shelf for all the little catchall things that end up laying around. Throw a paper clip in when I go by. Now I know where my stamps are. Now I know where something I need to not forget is. You can use this hook for something. Found picture of some lady that I found years ago that I absolutely love. She reminds me that.
Homemade Fire Ant Solution At Home With P. Allen Smith
You know, I'm usually a live and let live kind of guy, but these fire ants, well, they have got to go. And I've got a natural solution. You know, I'm all about natural home cures. And one of the cures my garden needs is, well, it needs to be eliminated of fire ants. I don't know if you have fire ants in your garden, but if you don't have them you're very lucky. Well, they're an invasive species. They've been making their way from the south, north, for some time. If you've ever stood on a fire ant hill accidentally, it doesn't take long.
To understand why they're given the name fire ants. Because these pernicious little insects leave whelps all over you. One of the things I don't like about them is that they actually are destructive to ground burrowing pollinators, like some of the bees that actually keep their hives in the ground. Their mounds can also be damaging to the roots of plants. I have a recipe that can help keep these ants at bay. It's a simple recipe actually, it couldn't be simpler borax and granular white sugar, and you're just mixing them in.
Equal parts. 1 cup of borax, which is what actually will kill the ants. The idea is that you want the worker ants to carry this into the nest, and they're gonna carry the sugar to feed the queen. The idea is If we can kill the queen, we'll kill the colony. So what I've done is I've just mixed these two together we have 2 cups. And then I want this to be evenly distributed, sugar and borax together. Now once it's all mixed together you're done. All you have to do now is apply it to the colonies. What you wanna do is just.
Sprinkle this on top, and just a little bit goes a long way. What I like to do is sprinkle a little, come back the next day and see if they haven't carried a lot of it away and then add some more. Of course if it rains after you've made an application, you're gonna have to come back and apply it again because the rain will dissolve the borax and the sugar. You see, borax is actually a naturally occurring compound that's mined. Ants don't like it in fact, it'll kill them. So it's a natural way of getting rid of this pernicious little.
