Here in Los Angeles housing is expensive but there's an alternative which could save about thirty percent on construction cost shipping container homes CBS News Tuesday market shows us more as the cost of living rises the way we live is changing people are living in modular homes prefab homes and even shipping container homes. containers get all the headlines countless shipping containers come into the ports of LA and Long Beach and many of them stay but some are being repurposed into everything from retail spaces to homes when Paula approached me about a shipping container home I thought this is insane.
And then I met Peter and I still thought it was insane. Matt and Paula dowd are using shipping containers to build two shipping container homes in Redondo Beach one for them and one for Grandma. I can age in place and my grandchildren will grow up here and I'll be with my daughter and my son inlaw. they're building with architect Peter DeMaria but it's an idea that still stirs controversy. In this area you mostly find Mediterranean or craftsman style homes and you bring something like this to the city and.
They're like, yeah I don't know it took several trips to the City Council to get their property approved with multiple modifications to the design and Matt had the same concerns as the city. my opinion was oh my gosh it's going to be boxy and corrugated but many homes built from shipping containers look like this and this all of these homes were designed by the architect very few people be able to tell wow that's a shipping container home. containers are the thing that really breaks down the door and people say.
Maybe I can do the little bit differently and I'm not going to sacrifice quality and I'm not going to sacrifice on the size of the house and all of it translates into doing it less expensively. most containers can be covered with any surface like wood stucco or vinyl siding and it's affordable while maintaining quality in general they're around 30 percent less than traditional construction a great value but the quality of construction is a heavy gauge steel that that blows away wood frame house a comforting thought in quakeprone.
Southern California and by upcycling metal containers it's one of the greenest options available so the containers become a means to an end we're changing the way we think about building and we're saving the planet. we're taking material and upcycling it as opposed to cutting down five or six acres of forest every time we put up a new wood frame house. DeMaria says there's a revolution to change how we live and the Dowd's are early adopters and I think this is how a great progress is made really this.

How to Make a BottleCap Party Whistle!
If you're at a party this summer and wanna grab someones attention, you could try charming the crowd with an improvised pan flute, or you could go for a more direct approach. In this project, we're turning bottle caps and drink cans, into sportsstyle party whistles, that'll give you the power you need, to summon the attention you deserve We're all familiar with the term lifehacks but this summer, the guys at mike's hard lemonade asked me to help put a refreshing twist on it with what they're calling mikehacks Mikehack basically a lifehack that makes any social occasion, more awesome.
I tried hot gluing some glass bottles together, and found that yes, they really can work as a pan flute. It's a pretty awesome idea, but can be pretty messy and take up a lot of space. So let's try making another kind of party favor, that's just as awesome, but a little easier to manage. We'll need to start this project with an empty aluminum drink can. Now if we use something like a pair of scissors to make some strategic cuts, we can harvest a lightweight sheet of aluminum metal. Now before you throw the scraps away, make sure you save a tab.
Or two, because we'll need those for measurements, in just a minute. Alright, let's cut a long narrow strip from the sheet metal, making sure the edges are as straight as possible, then cut a smaller, stubbier piece as well. You can see the long strip is the width of a single can tab, while the smaller piece is as wide, and as tall, as two pieces laid side by side. We need to join these pieces together with the smaller rectangle centered on top, about a quarter inch down from the end. The two.
Sides wrap around the back holding it in place, and now you can snip the top corners off, if you feel like it, and finish up by folding the tab over to lock everything together. We've just formed the mouthpiece for our whistle. Now let's grab the other end of the strip and push it back through the mouth piece, being careful not to bend it. You'll see what we're going to do with this, in just a minute. Alright, it's time to get busy with our bottle caps. I tried using a pair of scissors to snip the sides, and cut a little notch in.
Each cap, so when the two bottoms are lined up, they form a round container with a symmetrical hole at the top. Let's bring back the piece we made earlier and fit the barrel inside one of the caps, then expand it so it completely fills the inside. Now that we know it fits together nicely, we can line the inside of the cap with some hotglue, then place the rounded strip back in position. When the glue has hardened, it should look like this. Now this is the point where we form the noise maker. Carefully cut the strip so it lines.
Up with the top of the notch, then pull the scrap part out of the mouthpiece. There's only one thing left to do, and that's to add hotglue to the other cap, and press the two pieces firmly together, making sure the notches line up symmetrically. Now for one last embellishment, I tried cutting one of the tabs in half, and hotgluing it to the back, so now we have the option of adding a lanyard. That'll just make it fully accessible, anytime we want it. The whistle works by directing air through.
The mouthpiece, and splitting it over the sharp edge of the metal. Not only does it look good, but it actually sounds good too. If you try rolling your tongue when you blow, it'll sound a lot like a referee's whistle, and it's really, really loud. Well now you know how to convert your cans and bottle caps, into colorful and customizable party whistles, that'll summon you attention when you need it, and make a great conversation piece when you don't. Well that's it for now. If you liked this project, perhaps you'll like some.
Container Gardening Tips Plans Planting a Container Garden Home Gardening Tips, Ideas Advice
Hi! My name is Scott Reil and on behalf of Expert Village, I would like to talk to you about container gardening. Planting up your containers really couldn't be easier. I am going to show you a couple of little short cuts and tips that are going to help save you money and time, but for the most part this is a real easy proposition. We just got to remember what the plants want. Sure they need water and they need soil, but they also need not sit in water, so you don't want your soil to get boggy. One of the first things.
We will do we are going in and plant a container, so we are going to put some drainage stone down in the bottom. Not a lot. It's not necessary to put a whole bunch in on average. It adds weight to the container, but just an inch or so in the bottom is going to give us a little place for the water to actually come out of the pot and get out that drainage hole in the bottom. If we just put soil in there, it would get out to some degree but.
Not as readily, so it's a good idea. Now we go back and fill this up with soil, or do we We are going to be putting some smaller plants into this container. It's not going to take up quite so much space. So you can often find ways to cheat, and here I've got a container that doesn't have a hole in it and I'm going to drop that into the pot. It's going to sit down over the drainage rock so it still allows drainage on the sides. You want to make sure you are not totally sealing up the bottom of the pot with the.
Pot you are putting in. But in this case, because I put in the drainage stone, that's not an issue. But now I've taken up quite nearly half the volume of the pot that I'm not going to need to fill with this potting soil that I spent a good deal of money on. So we are saving potting soil this way and keeping things to a minimum. Now we are going to go ahead and fill it up the rest of the way with soil. This will give a good rooting.
Medium because of the nice things that we put in it it will add lots of whole humus and other materials that will help feed the plant and will be able to go in and plant plants in this just a minute. Now I've got a container that I've already filled up earlier. We are going to take and show you quickly how to plant some plants in here. I'm going to want these guys around the outside of the pot so it is easier for me to get them in around the edge and bring the soil up out of the central like this. I can.
Back fill on the edge a little extra soil. My bigger piece this one is going to grow up right. Fuchsia's are almost a big shrub so we want to give him plenty of room and some of these colias plugs around. Colias is a great foliage plant and the great foliage colors will offer a nice contrast. A little more soil, a quick watering and we've got a finished container. As this grows, it comes up and the plant develops into size. We are going to get a beautiful contrast of colors, foliage and flowers.
Food Storage Container Lids Together, or Separate Clutter Tutorial Tip
Hey, it's Lorie Marrero and today's Clutter Tutorial Tip is about the surprisingly controversial food storage containers. The controversy is about whether to POP store your containers and your lids separately or together. And I really believe it's a little bit of both. I think that nesting is the most efficient way in general to store something POP, like these are nested together, and then I like to keep the lids separate over here in a little simple shoebox that I can flip through and find the right lid. But sometimes if I have.
A really large container that has a large lid, I'll just store it right underneath so that it stays out of the way. So when you go to POP organize your food storage containers, the first thing you want to do is match up each container with its own lid. And then you'll end up with what we call orphans. Some lids without containers, some containers without lids. You want to batch all those orphans up together into a plastic bag or a box, put POP a date on it, and store it on a lower shelf somewhere and keep it for.
Just a couple of weeks to make sure you get everything out of rotation from your refrigerator or your dishwasher and make sure that you really don't need those. Then after that, you can donate the orphans POP or recycle them. And by the way, the major manufacturers of food storage containers have made it a little easier for us with a little code number or letter on the bottom of the lids and the containers that you can match up and confirm that you've got the right one.So where do you stand on this controversy Go attack your.
