Google Fiber Comes to Kansas City, KS

PATRICK PICHETTE Data speed is like oxygen, right Oxygen you take for granted until it disappears, and then it becomes everything, right Data is the same thing, right Everything running fine is fine. And then when you don't have data, when you buffer, you go, what Sucky. I don't know if you can see sucky on camera, but anyways, like very sucky. JOE REARDON Lack of bandwidth, the idea that there's not enough access today, I think, is evidenced in all kinds of places. ROBB HEINEMAN I have all kinds of personal experiences.

Where the internet and the speed of the internet's been incredibly frustrating. CINDY LANE The average high schooler has texted 1,200 times from the time they get out of bed to when they hit school at 730 in the morning. And so their world is fast, fast, fast, but when they get to the school, we slow way down. SERGEY BRIN Processor speed, power consumption, networking that we deploy within a datacenter. It has gotten just incredibly faster, by an order of magnitude, every few years. MILO MEDIN The communications network is the thing that's.

Falling behind in the speed of innovation. What we're trying to do with this effort is to take people from the megabit web to the gigabit web. PATRICK PICHETTE Today, everybody's used to three, four, five, six, 10, 20 megabits, right So a gigabit is like a thousand times bigger. MILO MEDIN One of our goals is to actually deliver that kind of connectivity to ordinary people. SERGEY BRIN That's why we're rolling out communities, starting with Kansas City, that are going to give one gigabit of access to every home.

BO FISHBACK It is going to probably be the most buzzed event in the history of Kansas City on the day it's announced and that is pretty awesome. That's pretty amazing. KEVIN LO In Kansas City, Kansas, we were absolutely blown away by the leadership. The Mayor, the city staff, the utility as well. BRENT MILES Next step infrastructure. ROBB HEINEMAN Nerd out the stadium. DR. ROY JENSEN Immediacy. And you weren't constantly reminded that your physician really is hundreds of miles away. CINDY LANE Parent conferences don't have to be just in the.

Schoolhouse door. CINDY CASH I don't know if Google Fiber has actually gotten to the point where you can send smells over fiber, but I think it's something y'all should start thinking about because that would certainly sell more barbecue. JOE REARDON When we make a commitment to that new idea or initiative, we don't know where it may lead, but we know potential's there for it to go to great places. BO FISHBACK I think what it is, is like a huge bet on human creativity. You just know something special is going.

How to Plant Gourds At Home With P. Allen Smith

If you've never grown gourds, you've never really lived. They're a lot of fun. Let me tell you about the hanging gourd gardens of Moss Mountain Farm. They start right here. You see this big long arbor Well, it's perfect for growing a fast growing vine. And when I talk about a fast growing vine, gourds you will not believe. I got some seed down here, and you'll see, I kind of worked up this area. Gourds love lots of sun and they'll grow in just about any kind of soil. I've enriched this with some good potting soil, so there's.

Lots of humus in here. And as soon as the soil begins to warm up, you see these irises Well, they're just about finished so that tells me that it's time to plant the gourds. The chance of a frost has passed and the soil is beginning to warm up. And gourds really like it hot. Now, what's amazing is they come in all different shapes. Last year, we had big long Dipper gourds. Different shaped gourds hanging from here, and it worked out really well. And this year, I want to make sure every inch of this is covered with leaves of gourd.

Vines and all kinds of gourd blooms, as well as the gourds themselves. And we have another one of these arbors on the opposite side, I'm going to do the same thing, for the same effect. So what you do is you take the seed, and they're really big, interesting seed. And you see, they're big, flat seed. Basically, what you're gonna do is just kinda sorta space them about a foot apart, like this. And I'm just gonna push those in and cover them up. Now, I've worked up this soil to about 12 inches deep, and I'm planting one variety.

Here. This Dipper gourd, the old fashioned Dipper gourd. The kind that they used to have by the well, where they would dip out of a bucket, some water, and drink from it. Now, what I'll do is, once these come up they'll have a primary set of leaves, and then the next set will be these big round leaves. These will germinate in about 10 days. And you'll see these great big leaves on them within two weeks. And then they start putting up runners. And that's when I'll lay some little sticks along here, and that'll give them a.

Leg up, so to speak, so they can began to climb over this entire arbor. Now, last year I actually took some string and kinda tied it along, and I may do that again this year. All you need is just something to kinda assist them, they have little tendrils to hang on to each of these metal supports that make the arbor. One last step. I fertilize generously with an organic fertilizer because you really want to make sure they're well fed, so you can growing the biggest gourds in the neighborhood. Hey, if you're enjoying following these tips.

Temporary housing planned for homeless in Waianae

Point3 million dollar plan to house some of the homeless living on the Leeward Coast is starting to take shape. A news conference is planned tomorrow, but. KITV4's Andrew Pereira has the details tonight. Andrew Yunji, the city is using shipping containers to build temporary housing at Sand Island. But this proposed facility will use modular construction. It's just off Farrington Highway next to Maluhia Lutheran Church. This one acre lot in Waianae is not much to look at right now, but holds a lot of promise for those down on their.

Luck. MAYOR KIRK CALDWELL THIS IS ABOUT HOUSING THE FOLKS IN WAIANAE IN WAIANAE IN A VERY NICE, MODULAR TYPE SETTING. Plans call for modular housing that can be split into 16 to 20 units complete with kitchens and bathrooms, so not much construction is involved. SANDRA PFUND WE'RE TRYING TO GET THIS TECHNOLOGY DOWN. WE'RE DOING SOME THAT ARE DIFFERENT IN SAND ISLAND FOR CONTAINERS, BUT WE CAN ALSO TRY THE MODULAR APPROACH, WHICH IS PREFABRICATED UNITS THAT WE CAN PUT UP QUICKLY. The facility will also feature parking, a common.

Area for residents and a community garden. The new facility could house as many as 90 people. SANDRA PFUND WE'RE LOOKING AT THIS AS A STEP UP FROM A TRANSITIONAL SHELTER, WE WANT TO SEE WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP TO BECOME A LITTLE BIT MORE PERMANENT FOR FAMILIES TO GET STABLE BEYOND THE SHELTERTYPE OPERATION. ANDREW PEREIRA YEAH THAT'S RIGHT, UNLIKE THE TEMPORARY HOUSING GOING UP AT SAND ISLAND, THIS FUTURE FACILITY WILL ACCEPT FAMILIES. MAYOR KIRK CALDWELL THERE'S NOT ENOUGH SITES FOR FAMILIES AND AS WE DO OUR ENFORCEMENT.

ACTIONS, WE DO NOT WANT TO ENFORCE AREAS WHERE FAMILIES ARE THAT DON'T HAVE A PLACE TO GO. AND THIS IS ABOUT HELPING FAMILIES GET A PLACE TO GO. The city hopes to acquire the 1.1 acre parcel for $300,000. The modular units and program office are expected to cost $2 million. The city wants the eventual operator to have close ties to the Leeward Coast, and will soon present the plans to the Nanakuli and Waianae neighborhood boards. MAYOR KIRK CALDWELL WE'RE WORKING VERY CLOSELY WITH THIS COMMUNITY, WE UNDERSTAND IT'S A.

TO SEE THOSE GUYS CELEBRATE AN OPPORTUNITY TO GO INTO THE PLAYOFFS AND WATCH THEM DEVELOP INTO A PLAYOFF CALIBER TEAM, A TEAM THAT I THINK IS GOING TO DO OK. WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT IT. STILL SOME THINGS ON THE TABLE FOR THIS TEAM. BUT IT'S A DO YOU FEEL IT'S A REAR LEAF WE STILL HAVE WORK TO DO. WE DON'T KNOW WHAT CAN HAPPEN.

Keeping It Level Day 147 The Garden Home Challenge With P. Allen Smith

They say an ecofriendly house can't be built in 150 days for $150,000, and I say it can. I'm Allen Smith, join me as I push the limits with time, budget and creativity with the Garden Home Challenge, exclusively on eHow Home. Ah ha, it works. That's what we like. The doorstop's in place. Very important because it will keep this knob from cracking my shower wall. Not a good thing. So here we are, we're adding the last, little final touches to the house, which includes some of the permanent bathroom accessories. Now what I mean by that,.

Well, this doorstop is an example. Another thing would be the towel racks. A robe hook for the back of the door. Hand towel racks. Toilet paper dispenser gotta have that. And one of the first things that you need to think about is, well, what are your walls What are you actually drilling into What are you attaching these things to The walls here are wood, so I can put a screw directly into the wall. If you're dealing with drywall, you may wanna use some of these drywall anchors. All you do is you pull this out, you drill.

The hole in the wall, and then you can pinch this down like this, and push that through the wall. And then for it to open back up, you just take this red point and push it in like that. And then behind the wall, you have this anchor. This comes out. And then you can drill the screw directly into this hole in the plastic. So you put it in here like this. It actually expands the plastic and makes it even more secure. So think about that. Alright, now, if you're hanging something that's long like this towel rack, you're gonna.

Want a level. Because if you're dealing with drywall, you wanna make sure that this is exactly plumb or level on the wall. So you wanna make sure that the bubble is right there in the center, then you know it's perfectly level. Of course, in this room, you can see here, we have as a guide we have these level planks. So you can almost eyeball it here. But I really feel like that you should use a level if you wanna make sure that it's perfectly level in place. Now a couple of other tools you're gonna wanna have will include a tape.

Measurer. Again, you wanna make sure you're getting it at the right place, centered and leveled and so forth. And then, a cordless drill. Take a look at the book of this door You can see, I've already started mounting this robe hook. And I used to the tape measurer to make sure that it was center in this panel of the door. I got it at the height that I wanted. And I've already drilled in one of the screws here at the top. And now what I'm gonna do is just drill in the second screw, which is very easy to do with a cordless drill.

Goes in just like that. Next, I just take the robe hook, and you can see the back of it is designed where it hooks over this. So what I'll do is just take this hook, slide it down like that. And now you can see it's still loose. And what they do is they package a little Allen wrench that goes along with it. And then you can just take that little Allen wrench, put it in there, then you can tighten it down. Hey, if you're enjoying these updates on the house, we're about to finish it. But we're starting the decorating. Check.
