Vancouver receives help for affordable housing from CMHC
Atira Women's resource society has been providing housing to women fleeing violence for almost 30 years. There's actually 2 components to this project. One is the original building, which has been here since 1912. In that building we're housing young women who have been homeless, there are 18 rooms and it's communal living. The second part of the project is the recycled shipping container component. There are 12 selfcontained studio units here. The units are affordable, the rent is affordable, it's safe. Women are not only being able to interact with each other.
Affordable seniors housing solutions in Atlantic Canada
Shelburne is located on the southernmost tip of Nova Scotia, so it's right on the Atlantic Ocean. It's very rural there's about 1800 people in the town. While there was some housing for low income people there was nothing for seniors, and I thought it's such a shame that these people who care so much about their community actually have to leave. I started looking for alternative solutions and sorted out that Atlantic Baptist Housing might be interested in coming, so I called them and asked them and they said, well you prove a need,.
And we'll come. And they did. Atlantic Baptist Housing is a notforprofit charitable corporation it was founded in 1970 to provide seniors housing solutions in Atlantic Canada. We respond to invitations by our local Baptist churches. We have churches in 450 communities in Atlantic Canada. We developed here in Shelburne Harbourside Landing. It's a 40unit apartment building. Two of those are fully accessible and they're well built, and make a nice place to live. After we had established that there was a strong need for affordable seniors housing here, we applied to CMHC.
For Seed Funding to help us begin the project. They used Seed Funding to engage an architect to develop preliminary designs and construction plans. This was important to maximize land use, which in turn improved affordability. We went with Maple Leaf Homes, who built the manufactured units in Fredericton transported them down. They took care of the design, the build, and all of those features, which cut some of the costs out as well. Within six months of starting, we had people living here. And that allowed us to begin to get revenue.
A little sooner as well. At the same time that we were founded, the organization formed the Atlantic Baptist Foundation. They work with us to provide mortgages for buildings. They also provide working capital when we start new projects which allows us to start faster with lower costs on the front end. So we work with the local communities, with banks, and with our foundation to bring the best affordable housing possible. I think that CMHC provided Atlantic Baptist Housing and the local build committee in Shelburne, a different way of looking at affordable housing.
That a project doesn't require a lot of government subsidy to be considered affordable. By building our properties in mostly rural areas, we let people continue to live in the communities they've lived in their whole lives. I wanted to stay in Shelburne but there was nothing available. I'm so happy to be here, and I love this apartment, and I like all the people in the building. Habourside Landing has given people hope, yes. Hope that they can stay in their communities, hope that they can live in a place where their needs are met.
Off Grid Living Part 2
The other part of our off grid living is the design ever house it is a breamed house and it is on a slab and like I said before we have a centralized heat which is just our wood stove so the slab has styrofoam underneath it and we designed it so that it has plenty of windows with plenty of light not only do we have a great view You can look on a nice sunny day and we are still at a twenty fivedegrees we have a little bit of a wind chill sun shining in.
Started a fire last night yesterday probably 5 six this morning haven't had any heat since then and its still 70 degrees. This slab gets heated up it just generates hetas throughout the day then with the sunshine in yea it just warms it up we will also have some stones on the stove here and its still quite warm just radiating all that heat very efficient, im just burning junk wood, popel Which is not by any means the greatest wood and we have no problem heating this whole place up.
And we have we have the cathedral ceiling. and the other part like I said about the breamed house all these doors um there there well basically what in in the dirt the whole back half yeah wall yes that cement wall dirt is butted into the mountain all these rooms dont need immediate heat they arent cold by any means, but if you close the doors in the evening it will get colder ummm you really dont need to heat the rooms up to this temperature and even in the summer our pantry stays quite cool the bathroom stays a little cooler.
Umm samething and also with the slab the other great this is in summertime gets ninety degrees out this slab stays nice and cool! you'll stay seventy degrees in here when its 90 degrees outside! granted we have some shades over the have windows so yeah.we have Super thick walls lots of insulation and the other thing is this little nock here we start all our earlyseason seeds this converts to like a little a little green house we we put a fluorescent lamp hanging from the ceiling there and we just up on a cement blocks.
Yukon receives help for affordable housing from CMHC
We need to look at innovative ways, of being able to provide adequate housing for First Nations in Canada no matter which way we do it. And partnerships are a great way of doing it. The Aboriginal population in the Yukon is over 26 of our total population. They are significant peoples who have lived here for many thousands of years. CMHC was the founding partner for Aboriginal Housing program. Aboriginal Housing Program is to promote home ownership within Aboriginal communities across Canada. Many Aboriginal families are looking forward to realizing.
Their dream of home ownership. We have started a project, with the Champagne Aishihik First Nations, to build three homes for home ownership on their settlement lands. Champagne Aishihik took the initiative. They had read about the AFN and Habitat Canada partnership. I'm really, really amazed at the amount of volunteers that's involved, the spectrum of people who are involved from all parts of the country, and they have come here to help out on this. Today, it's about hope. And it's about opportunity. It's about building relationships and expressing.
How to Pack Picture Frames Mirrors
Welcome to Movers the last stop for all you're moving needs! Movers has created a series of tutorials full of insider tips and instructions teaching you how to pack just like the professional movers do So if you're not sure about the best way to pack your picture frames we'll show you how Before you know it, you'll be packing your picture frames like a pro When packing picture frames, you'll need a few materials thick brown packing paper, mirror boxes a roll of packing tape, and a permanent marker Now that you know what you need, let's jump right in!.
Before you start packing, you should set up a packing area, like the one you see here Use a moving blanket or something similar to protect a tabletop or other surface and then gather all of the supplies you'll need. Lay the picture frame in the middle of the stack of brown packing paper and wrap it in the same way you would wrap a gift Neatness isn't important just make sure it's wrapped tightly Use plenty of tape to ensure the frame is secure Even though the frame will be put into a box.
It's a good idea to label it once it's wrapped You can indicate which picture it is and to which room it belongs in your new home Next, start preparing your mirror box Generally, a mirror box is made up of two pieces that fit around the frame and can be adjusted to whatever size you need Take one section of the mirror box, and stuff some packing paper into the corner and sides of it This will give your frame some cushion Do the same with the other side of the box.
Next, slip the frame into one side of the box and press it firmly into the paper Add some extra paper around the frame if necessary Then, slide the other portion of the mirror box into the first and over the frame Push the two pieces of the box firmly together to ensure the frame won't move around If you're packing a bigger frame, you may need to use four sections of mirror box, as shown here Tape all the way around the box several times, and in a few different places.
That way the box won't come apart while in transit Once your picture frame is packed, label the box with its contents and room destination Now your frames are ready for the move By now, you should be an expert in packing picture frames.
