Trends Talkers Container Homes
Container Could happen and it's what has you talking tonight. KITV4 got a peek inside what could be the future of micro housing in Hawaii. The demonstration project on the grounds of Honolulu Hale by the nonprofit group FACE is showing off a 20' by 8' shipping container, transformed into a dwelling unit for five people. There's room for bunkbeds and a desk inside, but no bathrooms or kitchen facilities. It cost about $11,000 to to make it livable. Could this be the answer to the our housing crunch Solomon DuPont says,.
Amazing Idea! Create more of these and then just make a public restroom area for all to share. This is a great start. Michael Guerrero writes, Nice. better then sleeping on the streets. But Denise Crosby counters, I don't get the great appeal. It has no bathroom or kitchen. I can't imagine living without runny water, if only to wash my hands. No facilities means they would need to be erected like a wagon train at night, with Porta Toilets barbecue grills or cooking implements, of course trash disposal. I.

Propane Tank Day 133 The Garden Home Challenge With P. Allen Smith
They say an ecofriendly house can't be built in 150 days for $150,000, and I say it can. I'm Allen Smith, join me as I push the limits with time, budget and creativity with the Garden Home Challenge, exclusively on eHow Home. Of course, the house has electricity, but it also has gas. This is a propane tank we have here. And what we did is we dug a trench from this point, which is tucked over here in the woods because I didn't wanna see the propane tank, all the way over to the house, which is slightly less than a 100 feet.
What we did is we dug a trench that was a least 18 inches that's the requirement to put the propane line in. It goes into the basement level of the house and comes up through the kitchen floor, because we need it for fuel for the stove, and also to heat the hot water in the house, and that's it. Now, for just that limited use, it's recommended that a 500 gallon tank, which is what you see here, be installed. The installation is really simple They deliver it. They place it on some concrete pads. It's tucked away from the house, as.
I mentioned. It can be buried, but the only reason you would bury it is because you wouldn't want to see it. You might see this as a retina irritant or an eyesore. But you don't have to bury it because of cold or weather. Propane doesn't freeze. It's very efficient to use. In fact, propane is rated at a 96 percent efficiency rate. That means, in very simple terms, for every dollar you spend, 96 percent of it is actually going to be burned as fuel, and you're gonna get the benefit of it. The other thing that's good about propane It's.
Used Cardboard Boxes, Inc. Mission Main Street Grants Chase
Intro music Marty Metro narrative, on off screen People see all my shirts it says used cardboard boxes and they kind of chuckle and laugh like, What do you do We sell used cardboard boxes. Sounds kind of boring and sounds kind of dirty. It's not. We buy quality used boxes from large companies, and we actually sort, inspect and palletize those boxes and sell them to large companies so that large companies have an easy, cheap, and environmentally friendly way to move their product. As a small business you're always looking for any opportunities for growth.
Zac Fratkin on screen, walking with Marty We're getting a lot of demand for these boxes right here. Marty Metro on off screen We saw the Mission Main Street Grant from Chase so we applied for the grant really just as an internal morale builder and I will never forget the day that we realized it was real. Zac Fratkin narrative, on off screen With that moment it kinda clicked in my head that we really are doing something right in this world. The grant absolutely helped us achieve the next step in our dream.
We've been able to hire more staff, purchase more inventory, get specialized machinery It allowed us to take huge steps forward much much faster. Marty Metro on the phone with a client Let me get finished with the numbers and we'll work on the proposal later this afternoon. Zak Fratkin talking to coworkers How are we doing gentlemen How's the shipment going Coworkersanswering Zak Fratkin Good good, we're doing fine. Zak Fratkin A lot of cardboard coming through, huh Employees Oh, yes. Definitely!! Zak Fratkin Excellent. Zak Fratkin narrative, on off screen We went from being a small company with just a few employees.
Marty Metro addressing employees in work space What's up gentlemen How you doing Good to see you, man. Zak Fratkin narrative, off screen.and now we have a major operation where we have an incredible amount of new job opportunities. Marty Metro narrative, on off screen It's allowed us to be more aggressive, to go out and buy more boxes. The grant money gave us all confidence. It wasn't about the money. It was about the fact that Chase recognized what we were doing. Five years from now, UsedCardboardBoxes will be much more of a household name of a brand name.
How to Repair an Oriental Rug At Home With P. Allen Smith
I wanna show this great, old Oriental rug that I found at an estate sale, recently. It was marked $2,000, and I got it for, I'm embarrassed to say, $400. And I just love the colors in it. And I debated whether to get it or not because I wasn't sure about the size and there was a hole in it. There's a hole right here, but we'll come back to that in just a minute. There's some wear on the rug, but I kinda like that it has a.
Wonderful sort of patina to it. It can add some soulfulness to a room. Now, you can use an Oriental rug to be the full rug for a room. Those are really expensive and hard to come by, particularly if you have a large room. So what I like to do is use an Oriental rug over another rug. You can see here, I have a roomsize rug that's in sisal, a natural fiber. And what I'd like to do is lay this colorful, old Oriental rug over it in a certain.
Area. Let me show you what I mean For instance, this rug is 6 12 by 16 12 feet. So if I measure it out, the rug will come about middle way here, up to this point, under the sofa, and over here, and it will define this sitting area that's focused on the fireplace. You see, I find that layering a rug on another rug is a great look and a good use for these Oriental rugs, particularly if you want a seasonal change in a room. I don't plan to.
Keep this rug in here throughout the year. I wanna use it in the fall and winter. It'll add a certain warmth both in terms of its color and the fact that's a lovely wool rug. Now if you find a rug like this, there are a couple things you'll wanna keep in mind Since I was able to buy this at such a great price, I have enough room in my budget, if you will, to have this rug cleaned. And I can also have it repaired. But both of these.
Things need to be down by an expert. I'm David Martinous, Martinous Oriental Rug Company. Our family has been in this business since 1923. We introduced professional rug cleaning to the state of Arkansas, and of course, we're dealers in handmade Oriental rugs from around the world. I just had a nice rug brought in by Allen. It's a Herati. It needs a little bit of attention. It's got a place where we need to patch it, clean it, and spruce it up a little bit. What Robert is doing here right now, he's cutting this out and we're.
Gonna plug this in. A lot of times, instead of weaving a rug, we have a lot of scrapes and so we can plug it and make it look real good. So that's what he's gonna be doing. We've got a couple pieces here. He'll put a patch on the back to keep it in place, and it will look real well when he's finished. Okay, in this case, what he's gonna do, he's gonna do something a little bit different. Instead of using this, it's gonna be a little bit off on the pattern, he put this solid piece in, and he'll put a patch on the back,.
Glue that in, make it stable, and then he'll take his color kit and he'll color this and blend this in with this so you won't even notice that a patch is even there. Okay, now what we've got here is This rug has been submerged. It's been in the pit for about 24 hours. With animal stains and odors. We're getting ready to pull it out. We're gonna squeegee all the water out. It's gonna slide into our dry room. We're gonna vacuum this pull with the water out, pull it up to dry. And after it's finished, we do a shampoo wash.

AntWorks Illuminated Ant Farm Gel
AntWorks provides you with a revolutionary way to observe the astute architectural brilliance of nature's beloved ants. This six and a half inch by six inch spaceage habitat is based on technology used by NASA. The translucent gel not only allows you to watch the ants create their network of tunnels, but also provides the ants with food and water for survival. Speaking of ants, you must collect your own or order some from the enclosed order forms found in your AntWorks instruction manual. This instruction manual also includes tons of interesting ant facts.
Once you've received your batch of ants, remove the lid and poke four holes in the gel using the included two and a quarter inch stick. These holes act as starting points for the ants to begin tunneling. Next, insert approximately 20 to 25 ants into the container. Larger ones, such as harvester ants, are recommended. Their size makes them easier to observe, and their large mandibles are great for tunnel digging. Avoid mixing different species of ants, as they could spend more time fighting than actually creating tunnels. Because the gel is a very foreign environment for ants,.
24 to 48 hours may pass before any digging occurs. As you watch the time lapse footage of our ants in action, keep a few things in mind. First, avoid storing the AntWorks in direct sunlight. Ants prefer shade, so put them in a room temperature between 50 and 74 degrees Fahrenheit if possible. Second, the gel consists of more than enough food and water for your ants to survive. In addition, ants require little oxygen, so the small holes on the lid are sufficient. However, opening t lid for a few seconds every week.
Wouldn't hurt. Finally, ants generally have a lifespan of one to three months. Some may live longer, and some may expire before a month. Once the ants have begun digging and their intricate tunnels begin to form, you can study their unique, intelligent behavior up close. Their network of tunnels is nothing short of amazing. AntWorks comes with a magnifying glass, allowing you or your child to observe specific ant mannerisms unable to be seen by the naked eye. The included extreme zoom lens lets you get even closer to the action.
